Bible Quiet Book: Armor of God

Well, this is my last blog post about my Bible quiet book! I'm glad you came along with me on this journey, and I hope you are inspired to make your own sometime soon.

The last page we'll look at is the Armor of God. I saw a lot of ideas on the internet for this particular theme, but I still chose to create my own template.

This was one of my last pages, and I must say I was getting a little lazy and hurried in my production. I ended up mostly gluing the pieces together and not doing much sewing. However, I've already had some issues with the pieces coming apart, so I encourage you to take the time to do it right. Just a few well placed stitches can make a huge difference on the long-term durability of the pieces.

Bible Quiet Book: Peter Fishing

Hello again!

Here's another page that my children adore. I didn't create the original template. I got it here. However, I added Jesus watching on the shore to my page, so I will include the Jesus template at the bottom of this post.

My kids are really into fish, so this page is a lot of fun for them. I used some mesh ribbon for the net. It is starting to really stretch out though, so I recommend that if you do the same, weave some thread through the upper edge to make it a bit more sturdy.

Here is the Jesus template. (I have to apologize on this template. It blew up to take up the whole page when I scanned it. You'll need to shrink it in order for it to be the right size. Again, sorry!)

Bible Quiet Book: Ruth

This was another Bible story page that I created on my own.

Here is Ruth gleaning grain in the field and Boaz is watching from a distance.

Ruth can come free from the page and walk around gathering sheaths from the field.

Bible Quiet Book: the Samaritan Woman and Jesus

I was very pleased with how this page turned out. The details are really nice. This page depicts the scene of Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman at the well.

A basket of water can be lifted from inside the well.

I added the bird at the last minute and decided to make it snap off for additional play.

Bible Quiet Book: Baby Moses

Here is another page from my quiet book featuring baby Moses in the basket and Pharaoh's daughter.

This picture shows the details on the basket.

The baby snaps out of the basket. I left the Pharaoh's daughter's hand unglued so she could hold the baby. My little daughter especially likes to play with this page.

For the reeds, I just made block templates. After cutting out the block, you can then finely cut the individual grasses. Here are my templates.

Bible Quiet Book: Rahab and the Spies

Hello again! Yes, I'm going all out on the posts today. :)

I'm excited to share with you this next quiet book page. Again, I saw no ideas on the internet for this, so just created my own template from a coloring page. (Have I mentioned how helpful coloring pages were to me for creating this whole project? They were invaluable, which is why I always try to share the ones that helped me. You can either use the templates I created from them or use the coloring pages to make your own designs!)

So here is my Rahab and the spies page.

She can hide the spies under the straw on the roof.

All hidden! They can escape out the window with the red cord. 

I didn't include templates for simple things like the moon and the torch. They were pretty easy to design and make on your own. Here are my templates.

Bible Quiet Book: Jesus' Death, Burial, and Resurrection

Here is the last two page spread I designed. I really wanted to include this theme in my quiet book but couldn't find any ideas, so I just created them myself based off coloring pages for the tomb and ascension and my own imagination for the rest.

As a last minute addition, I sewed in three flower buttons behind the bush by the tomb. I tell my children that it signifies the three days Jesus was in the grave, but they are flowers because of God's promise that He would raise His Son from the dead!

I sewed in a strip of white cloth for the grave clothes that Jesus was wrapped in at His burial.

Here is the tomb closed up with the rock. I thought about creating a soldier that would be uncovered when you moved the rock, but it felt like a lot of additional work and I was anxious to keep moving on this project, so that idea eventually got ruled out. Maybe you can add it to yours!

Here is the resurrection page. Jesus ascends into Heaven on a cord. I should have created more disciples, but again, time restraints kept these details to a minimum.

I was grateful for the many opportunities I had to share about Jesus with my children as they watched me work on these pages. It was well worth the effort to create these pages just for that blessing alone.

Bible Quiet Book: Noah's Ark

Well, it's been awhile since I posted here. I know... I'm sorry. Life got really busy for us for a time, but we are settled into routine again and I am starting to clean off the projects piled on my desk. One of those projects is to finish blogging about my Bible quiet book and to share my templates with you.

So here comes another great page . . . Noah's Ark!

This was the last page I did and it was one of the easiest. I have access to some really cute, really cheap hand crocheted animals here, so I didn't bother creating any animals for the inside of the Ark. My kids LOVE this page...

Here are the templates I created for the page... pretty basic stuff. My husband had a great suggestion for installing the zipper on the Ark. I actually just sewed it to the back of my fabric and then cut the slit for the zipper after stitching it all the way around. It worked great!

Bible Quiet Book: the Nativity

Okay, these pages I did not design. Some other great gal already did the work of designing this template before me. You can get these great free templates here.

I modified her project for a quiet book (her original application was a cute Advent calendar). I created backgrounds of sky and land and I modified the stable to make it a bit more substantial. Here are the finished pages, just to inspire you!

These two pages probably took the most time of any of my pages (approximately 3 weeks to complete). There are a lot of little pieces and I hand sewed all of them. However, they were worth the extra work as they turned out quite detailed and beautiful.

I hope you give these pages a try. They are a significant contribution to the Bible quiet book.

Bible Quiet Book: Joseph

Here is my next template for you to try. This page is Joseph and several changes of outfits. I saw a lot of ideas for Joseph and his coat of many colors on the internet. But I decided to take this page one step further.

Joseph has four outfits: one for each season of his life.
1. He has his coat of many colors for when he is at home with his father and brothers.
2. He has a simple outfit for when he is Potiphar's slave.
3. He has a poor outfit with chains on his wrists for when he is in prison.
4. He has a elegant outfit for when he is second in command in Egypt.

My original template for Joseph came from this coloring page.

Bible Quiet Book: Jonah and the Whale

As promised, here is the first post in a series showing my pages in detail plus the templates I used to create them. Let me just say that the Jonah and whale pages are some of my kids' favorites. They ask to play with these pages more than any others. 

Let's start by looking at how my finished pages turned out. This is the two page spread.

This is the whale. I found some cute sea creature buttons that I sewed on for added details.

Here is the beach side, where Jonah can be spit up onto the dry land.

Jonah can fit inside the whale's mouth.

Jonah, 3 felt fish, and 3 coconuts can all snap off for fun play.

So here are the templates to make these pages! I just included the top of the waves for the background, as my full page would not fit on a 8.5" x 11" page. You can make the background water as long as needed to fit your page size. Click on the names to access the PDFs for download.

I did not create the beach template. I modified the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom template from this website.

Update 4 on Bible Quiet Book

I guess you know what this picture means. My Bible quiet book is done! Hip, hip, hoorah!

We tested it for the first time today in church, and the kids loved it. I realized I'd better take pictures quick before it gets "loved on" too much.

Update 3 on Bible Quiet Book

Eeeeeeek!

Okay, sorry... just had to get that out.

I'm so excited to say that just finished my last page. All my pages turned out really well, and I'm so excited to get to share them with you soon.

All I have left to do is to bind the book somehow and make the cover. I'll be taking a trip downtown soon to get the final supplies I'll be needing.

A look back at my blog shows me I started planning this project in February and now it is almost finished, 5 months later. Can't wait to get it bound so we can take it to church for our "maiden voyage," although the kids have been playing with individual pages for quite awhile now.

So, hang in there a little longer. Once I complete the book, I will be blogging like crazy, giving detailed instructions, templates, and pictures to show you how you can do what I did!

Update 2 on Bible Quiet Book

I know it's been awhile since I posted anything here about my Bible quiet book, but I wanted you to know I have been working on it quite diligently (at least until recently).

This picture is proof that I have gotten something done!

I had a chance to showcase my work at a homeschool "show and tell" at our church. No, I'm not technically homeschooling yet, but I will be next year. :)

I've completed 8 pages so far. I need to do 6 more and make the cover. Progress is being made! Although I've taken a brief break from my concentrated work to complete some other tasks, I expect to resume my work soon. Stay tuned for more!

Update on Bible Quiet Book

So, I'm excited to share with you that I finally made it this week to the fabric store. My friend and I are both making quiet books, so she and I went downtown to a store that she really likes.

There, I bought all sorts of fun stuff and I am so excited about the ideas for some of my pages.

Look at all those lovely, bright colors!

I think I bought way too much felt for just this project, but that's okay. I have several other quiet books I want to make, so I'll have some for those as well. It was hard for me to estimate how much I'd use.

I'm still working on my templates, so I'm not yet ready to start cutting. But progress has been made and I can't wait to continue. Stay with me folks; this will be fun!

A Sneak Peak...

Okay, so I have decided to work on a Bible quiet book for my kids. As I started collecting ideas and templates, I discovered that most of the Bible quiet books came from blogs by Mormons. Some of their pages were great, but others were based on stories that aren't in the Bible, so I assume they come from some of their other writings. Obviously, those were not of interest to me. Thus I determined several things:
1. I was going to have to make my own templates for quite a few pages that I'd like to do.
2. I wanted to share my templates and final outcomes online for other evangelical Christians who are wanting to make quiet books for their children.

I am waiting to get a sewing machine to get started on this project, but in the meantime, I am continuing to collect ideas and create my templates.
Here is the tentative plan for my book:
1. Joseph's coat of many colors
2. Baby Moses in basket on river
3. Peter's fishing boat
4. Nativity scene
5. Cross, tomb, and resurrection of Jesus
6. Jonah and fish

I am using Bible coloring pages found online to get me started on most of the templates as I am not an artist. Give me time as I will be working on this project for quite a while (remember I have 3 young children!), but I am excited to work on this project and will look forward to sharing with you the results.
